A perfectly tied bow tie is the ultimate final flourish to an evening or New Year’s Eve party outfit. Say goodbye forever to the lesser, clip-on varieties of this classic accessory with my step by step video guide on how to tie a bow tie.
HOW TO TIE THE PERFECT BOW TIE
Standing in front of a mirror, place the bow tie around your collar so that the left side hangs approximately two inches lower than the right.
Cross the shorter end underneath the longer end. The point at the collar where the two strands cross will be your bow point and determines how tight you want it.
Cross the long end under the short end and pull up towards your chin while pinching the crossing point.
This is the tricky part; form your bow by doubling up the shorter end. Place it across the collar point.
Hold this place and drop the other strand over the front, so that two bows shapes form at either side.
At this point, one hand is holding the bow in place and the other is holding the dangling strand. Double it back on itself and poke it through the loop behind the bow.
Push it through to form a knot and the bow tie structure will be secure. Pull it to tighten and tweak to make sure both ends are the same shape and size.
